We are aware of several "similar sounding" products being sold as privacy devices. Some are sold at those Retail K or W - Marts and R-Shacks or Spy shops.
The cheaper versions (sometimes referred to as a Tele-Zapper) requires you to actually answer the ringing line and if it is a "computer generated" Telemarket call, the unit (supposedly) emits a tone to "fake out" the computer so it deletes (again supposedly) your number from its database.
[Note: these devices do NOT block Obscene callers, threats, jealous Ex's or Bill collectors, or ANY normally dialed calls].
We've questioned their technical department and asked how can someone know for sure their number has been deleted? They have no answer.
Additionally, you have-to answer the ringing line, so you ARE disturbed. If the unit works AFTER the first call from Telemarketing company computer Number-1 (follow this-example) then your number is supposedly deleted from THAT specific computer. But you have been disturbed once.
Now there are hundreds or thousands of companies (or branch offices) using computers all over the nation to do telemarketing. You will have to answer your telephone at least once for EVERY ONE of these computers (computer Number-2, Number-3, Number-457 etc), and by the time your phone-number is deleted from ALL computers nationwide, some of these companies are out of business, but new ones are in business and dialing your line that you have-to answer again, and it goes round and round.
Other more expensive units starting around $290.00 only allow you to answer calls from their phone/device in one room only. In other words, their unit plugs into a phone jack and (hopefully) stops all your home (or business) phones from ringing. Only their phone/device rings.
So if you plug their phone/device in the master bedroom (to stop THAT phone from ringing) so you can sleep, but you are in the living room watching TV, you cannot hear the bedroom phone ringing if it is your mom or an important call from someone you DO want to speak with AND they know your code to ring your phone, because ONLY THE PHONE IN THE BEDROOM IS GOING TO RING.
In other words, NO OTHER PHONE DEVICE (other than Privacy Plus) controls ALL phones in the building, and no other device will ring ALL the phones in the building/home IF the caller has your code, if the caller is someone you DO want to speak with.
HERE IS THE LITMUS TEST: If you find any other device that you are considering purchasing, call or write their technical department and ask this specific question;
"If I plug your device in my spare bedroom and the door is closed and I am outside on the back porch or by my swimming pool with a telephone plugged in the outside jack, when someone calls me and your device is On (privacy), will the phone outside at my swimming pool ring so I can answer it there? (IF your device is plugged in the jack in my spare bedroom or home office?)?"
OF COURSE THEIR ANSWER WILL BE NO!
Other devices require you to KNOW (in advance) the phone number of someone so you can program their number to be blocked. This is limited and worthless. As one example - if you block your jealous ex home number, he can go to a pay phone and call you and get through, same for telemarketers dialing from different numbers. Caller-ID units work only for some numbers.
If you find any other device and get a "yes" answer (to the above question), send us the information and we will check it out. If we cannot show you on paper that theirs do not do what ours does, we will not only match their price but beat it by another $15.00 for your effort.
HOWEVER: if you are concerned about eavesdropping and true privacy, you may wish to ask them if their device offers a "safe-disconnect" feature.
